Marysville Appeal Democrat Article 9/16/2010

Here's an article about last nights game from the Appeal Democrat:

Down in numbers, 49ers roll Chabot

The crux of Greg Chapman's postgame speech took all of eight syllables.
"We'll talk about it tomorrow," the Yuba College volleyball coach said.
His team had just won its home opener, and there was no use spoiling the mood by listing all the facets the 49ers need to workshop after a sloppy sweep of Chabot College.
"Let them enjoy it," he said.
In their final match before starting Bay Valley Conference play, the 49ers had a pothole-filled cruise to a 25-19, 25-20, 25-21 win on Wednesday over the Gladiators, who were without their best hitter and dressed six players — the bare minimum.
And while the coach gave his nascent squad a reprieve before breaking down this contest's faults, his players know they could, and should, do better.
"Yeah, we won, but we didn't play at our full potential," said setter Taylor Thompson, who finished with 22 assists. "It felt like we were going through the motions."
Yuba (3-4) played Chabot in tournament play earlier this season and topped Gladiators by double digits in each set. In the sweat lodge-like heat of their own gym, the 49ers couldn't replicate the same success. Chabot mixed in a dash of glimmering moments with a whole flour sack of 49ers miscues to stay competitive.
In the second game, the Gladiators rolled off a 6-0 run to make a 23-13 waxing a timeout-calling affair. In the final game, Chabot had a 16-12 lead and was behind 22-21 before Yuba sealed the victory with help from powerful Hailey Harris spike on the match's penultimate point.
Harris finished with nine kills, Kelijo Boney had seven and Brittany Keyes tallied four.
"We have to get used to each other," Thompson said. "We're not to the point where we're trusting everyone but it has gotten better over the last two weeks."
That is precisely what Chapman expects with his 10-woman team of all freshman. So though they'll be spending today's practice working on footwork, balancing and redirecting and playing better off the block, the fact they hustled can't be undervalued, he said.
Now the key is seeing if they can take that dive-for-anything mentality and combine it with fluid fundamentals before Friday's BVC opener against Los Medanos.
"I want to do something better every time," he said. "I want to see something get better every single day."
