Very nice drive up to Mendocino College.  Took the bus with the team and it was SO nice not having to drive.  It's "Sophomore Night" tonight, so Mendocino will be honoring their graduating members.  Life comes at you fast in community college, you start and then boom, you're graduating to a 4-year school.

Should be a fun night.  Here we go with game 1.

49ers grounded by Solano

Slim playoff chances squashed in final home match

Taylor Thompson doesn't have much use for pretty adjectives when her team loses.
"It's sucky," she said.

Still, in a season that looked doomed from the beginning on paper, even the Yuba College setter can find some positives in the 49ers progression since August. This team that consists of all freshmen was in contention for the postseason, right up until Wednesday, when Solano came in and ended all hopes with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 home finale defeat for the 49ers.

"I thought we played well tonight," she said. "We didn't give up — like a fight."
Still, it stung.

"No, I wanted to go to the playoffs," Thompson said.

Yuba entered the Bay Valley Conference match needing quite a lot to get back to the postseason for a second straight season. First, the 49ers (13-8 overall, 10-4 in conference) needed to sweep the Falcons. Then, they needed to win their final two road games against Contra Costa and Mendocino just to be able to cross their fingers for other opponents to lose.

So when an errant 49ers spike ended the first game and put an end to the playoff hopes, Yuba coach Greg Chapman calmly walked by the scorer's table as his team switched sides. He knew what his team was up against and once the postseason pipe dream was over, he just wanted them to play hard against a strong Falcons squad.

Well, Yuba had its moments. In game two, the 49ers rallied back from a 12-3 deficit to make it interesting and Solano coach Darla Williams needed to call a pair of timeouts.
But against the deep and athletic Falcons roster, the 10-woman 49ers didn't have enough.
"Playing them is like playing tennis against a brick wall," Chapman said. "It just keeps on coming back."

But the coach is also excited about his players coming back next year. So when asked about losing a chance at the postseason, he shrugged it off, preferring to focus on this team's maturity.

"They came together really well and made some strides that I didn't think we could," he said. "They learned to work together in a lot of different ways.

"We want to keep improving. It's a matter of finishing strong and not leaving a bad taste in our mouths."

Then comes extra conditioning training and an offseason full of work to compete with the Solanos and Napa Valleys of the BVC. Yuba usually rolls through the weaker teams in the conference before facing battles against those two opponents.

Thompson finished with 17 assists, Hailey Harris had eight kills and three digs, and Alisha Benge had four kills and seven digs. Brittany Keys and Kelijo Boney each contributed four kills for the 49ers, who are now playing strictly for themselves.

Yuba has continual success against both Mendocino and Contra Costa, and the plan for the final two games of the year is simple and brutal, Thompson said.

"We'll kill them and finish on a good note," she said.

Game 3:  We will start with the serve.  Alisha starts us off with a rip from the back row, 1-0 with Taylor serving.  Ref fails to call a obvious double, 1-1.  Solano serves out, 2-1 with K9 to serve.  We shank a pass and it's 2-2.  Net serve by the Falcons, 3-2 with Megan to serve.  Solano rips one deep, 3-3.  Taylor pushes one deep that they can't return, 4-3 with Judy to serve.  Double call on Solano, 5-3.  Ace by Judy, 6-3.  Solano gets one to fall, 6-4.  Looks like they've put in the subs.  But even then they get one through our block, 6-5.  Bad serve receive, 6 all.  Solano in the net, 7-6 with Alisha to serve.  Net serve, 7-7.  We resort to tipping and they make us pay, 7-8.  Bad serve receive, 7-9.  Solano hits out, 8-9 with Hailey to serve.  Ace by Hailey, 9-9.  Double on Solano, 10-9.  They tie it up with a rip down line, 10-10.  We let a tip fall in, 10-11.  Confusion and we let another one just fall, 10-12.  10-13, 10-14 both on bad serve receive.  K9 gets a tip to go over the block, 11-14 with Taylor to serve.  K9 rips one down, 12-14.  Net serve, 12-15.  Solano gets one off the block, 12-16.  Brit hits long, 12-17.  Alisha gets one from the back row, 13-17 with K9 to serve.  Net serve.  Unbelievable!  13-18.  Megan hits long, 13-19.  Falcons get another one down deep, 13-20.  Timeout Yuba.  To be honest, our serving is not very good tonight and neither is our passing.  We just don't have it all working.  Brit puts one in the net, 13-21.  Solano in the net, 14-21 with Megan to serve.  Ace by Meg, 15-21.  Long serve makes it 15-22.  Ace by Solano, 15-23.  Net serve, 16-23 with Judy in to serve.  Solano gets one, 16-24.  Out of position on the back row and a simple roll shot just falls in the hole, 16-25 for the game and the match.

Home Game vs Solano College 10 Nov 2010 - pregame

Well, here it is.  The moment of truth for this team.  We lost at Solano 20-25, 19-25 and 19-25 back in Oct.  So if we are going to make the playoffs, two things need to happen.  We can take care of the first one, BEAT Solano by more than 17 points total in 3 games.  Doable, but we need our best effort.  The second thing is out of our control, Napa needs to beat Solano in the last match of the year.  That would put us in 2nd place for league.  So the table is set and we need to do our part.  Hopefully we are focused and ready to play.  Need to move the ball around and keep our hitters engaged.  If we back off the intensity and start tipping and using roll shots, we're in for trouble.  We need to put the pressure on Solano to play defense and make them be perfect on their passes.  Hard hitting and finding the holes will create that pressure.  Don't let them run their offense at will, make them have to work to get the shots they want.  It's just that simple.  On our side, we need to hustle and play defense, nothing hits the floor!

Hailey Harris slammed 16 kills, recorded four digs, three aces and a pair of blocks in the Lady 49ers' 25-12, 25-13, 21-25, 25-20 home victory over Marin.

The win keeps Yuba (13-7 overall, 10-3 in the Bay Valley Conference) in the playoff discussion, but head coach Greg Chapman believes a bid is a long shot away.

Kelijo Boney tacked on 10 kills, seven digs and seven aces, while Judy Saefong had eight digs and an ace. Taylor Thompson racked up 30 assists, five digs and three kills.

Game 3:  Ok, looks like Alisha is getting to play in this game.  Not sure why but she sat out the first two.  This should change how things play out on the court.  Marin serving.  Marin gets one deep on the line, 0-1.  K9 rips one deep, 1-1 with Taylor to serve.  Double call on Marin, 2-1.  K9 puts one down, 3-1 with Taylor serving.  She serves net, 3-2.  Marin serves long and K9 goes to the line, 4-2.  She also puts it in the net, 4-3.  Brit gets blocked, 4-4.  Marin gets one deep in the corner, 4-5.  The dum-dums are back!  Alisha stops the bleeding, 5-5 with Megan to serve.  Taylor sends one deep, 6-5.  Marin blocks Alisha, 6-6.  Hammertime gets it right back, 7-6 with Judy to serve.  Marin gets one off a touch, 7-7.  K9 gets blocked on a back row attempt, 7-8.  Marin gets in the net, 8-8 with Alisha to serve.  Double call on us, 8-9.  K9 gets blocked, 8-10.  Marin gets another one off our block, 8-11 and Coach wants a timeout!  We have brought out the dum-dums bigtime in this game.  Hadn't seen much of them in the first two games.  Back to action.  Hailey gets a tip to fall, 9-11 with Hailey to serve.  K9 with a block, 10-11.  Megan with a block, 11 all.  Ace by Hailey, 12-11.  We are slow on D and let one fall again, 12-12.  We are way to slow on D, 12-13.  Hailey sends one wide from the back row, 12-14.  Marin gets another one off a touch, 12-15.  K9 gets one to go finally ending a long rally, 13-15 with Taylor to serve.  Marin puts one in the net, 14-15.  Taylor serves long, 14-16.  Brit hits long, 14-17.  K9 rips one from the right side, 15-17 and she gets to serve.  Ace!, 16-17.  Marin gets one off a touch block, 16-18.  Bad serve receive, 16-19.  Marin hits long, 17-19 with Megan to serve.  We serve wide, 17-20.  We need to pick it up!!!  Marin pops one in, 17-21.  Hailey gets stuffed, 17-22.  Timeout 49er's.  Brit rips one for 18-22 and Judy to serve.  Ace by Judy, 19-22.  Marin puts one in the net, 20-22.  Hailey with a block, 21-22.  Haley gets in the net, 21-23.  Bad serve receive, 21-24.  Alisha puts one in the net and we lose a game 21-25.  This is not funny!  We should be on our way out of here right now.  Wake up Ladies!!!  Needless game 4 coming up.

Game 2:  We will start with the serve in this game.  Taylor will start us off.  Marin gets one off the block, 0-1.  They get one through our block, 0-2.  Marin serves long, 1-2 with K9 to serve.  Ace and it's 2-2.  Megan gets a block up and scores, 3-2.  Marin hits wide, 4-2.  Double on Marin, 5-2.  Ace Ace Baby, 6-2.  Brit gets in on the action, 7-2.  Big block by Megan and Britt, 8-2.  We shank a pass out of play and it's 8-3.  Marin gets another one off our block, 8-4.  Taylor catches them up close and sends one to the back line, 9-4 with Megan to serve.  Marin hits one off the antenna, 10-4.  They hit wide, 11-4.  Rejected by Hailey and Brit!, 12-4.  We lose control of one, 12-5.  Marin serves long, 13-5 with Brit serving.  Taylor sends one deep that they can't return, 14-5.  Taylor stuffs an overpass, 15-5.  Hammertime Hailey puts another one down, 16-5.  Marin gets a dink over the block, 16-6.  Hammertime rips another one, 17-6 with Judy to the line.  Marin puts one in the net, 18-6.  Marin gets a nice shot down line, 18-7.  We let one get blocked out of confusion on the front row, 18-8.  Hailey slips one in, 19-8 with Hailey to serve.  Hailey puts one in the net from the back row, 19-9.  Marin puts it in the net, 20-9 with Taylor to serve.  Megan gets stuffed, 20-10.  Double call on us, 20-11.  K9 rips one down line from the right side, 21-11 with K9 to serve.  Marin called for a lift, 22-11.  Ace by K9, 23-11.  Back to back Aces, 24-11.  Marin ends a long rally with a point, 24-12.  We roll one on the net that lands out, 24-13.  Marin serves net to end it 25-13.  Moving to game 3.

Home Game vs Marin College 11/5/2010 Game 1

It's been a while since we played a match, so we may be a little rusty to start off tonight.  Not to mention that the girls may be focused on the burgers we'll be eating at the big bonfire tonight.  Yep, my burn pile got too big, so we had to arrange a bonfire cookout for after the match tonight.  All the girls are driving over and we're cooking up some burgers and then roasting some smores over the big fire.  Oh Yeah!!!


Game 1:  Megan gets things started with a slam in the middle, 1-0 with Taylor to serve.  We put one in the net and it's 1-1.  Marin serves long, 2-1 with K9 to serve.  Ace, 3-1.  And another one, 4-1.  Marin get the next one in on an angle shot, 4-2.  Brit makes them pay from the right side, 5-2 with Megan to serve.  Judy puts one in the net and it's 5-3.  Hammertime gets it back with one in the middle, 6-3 with Brit to serve.  Lift call on Marin, 7-3.  Ace by Brit, 8-3.  Marin gets one off a touch block, 8-4.  Marin puts one in the net, 9-4 with Judy to serve.  Marin hammers one down, 9-5.  Marin serves long, 10-5, Hailey to serve.  Ace, 11-5.  Marin gets one in the middle, 11-6.  They serve long again, 12-6 with Taylor to serve.  Confusion on back row defense lets one fall, 12-7.  Brit saps one from the left side, 13-7 with K9 to serve.  Marin puts it in the net, 14-7.  We are slow to move on D and it's 14-8.  Brit gets another one down, 15-8, with Megan to serve.  Block goes out and it's 15-9.  But you can't touch Hammertime, 16-9 with Brit to serve.  Marin hits long, 17-9 and it's a timeout on the floor.  Brit to serve coming out of the timeout.  Marin gets caught in the net, 18-9.  They get one off a touch block again, 18-10.  We get in the net, 18-11.  Hammertime rips one down line, 19-11 with Judy to serve.  Marin gets one down, 19-12.  They serve net, 20-12 with Hailey to serve.  Block by Megan and Taylor, 21-12.  Hailey gets one from the back row, 22-12.  Ace by Hailey, 23-12.  Another Ace, 24-12.  Double call on Marin ends the game, 25-12.  Changing sides and moving on to game 2.

Game 3:  We will start off with Taylor serving.  Alameda hits long, 1-0.  Stuff by Meg and Brit, 2-0.  Serve hits net then bounces in to the antenna, 2-1.  Megan slaps one down, 3-1 with K9 to serve.  Double on us after a great dig by K9, 3-2.  We lose a joust, 3-3.  Brit gets a roll shot to go, 4-3 with Megan serving.   We hit out, 4-4.  Net serve, 5-4 with Judy in to serve.  Cougars put another one in the net, 6-4.  Hammertime gets another one down, 7-4.  Alisha knocks one off the block, 8-4.  Alisha gets a block, 9-4.  Hailey stuffs a dink attempt, 10-4.  Alameda hits wide, 11-4.  We let one fall short, 11-5.  Hailey tries a C that hits the net but Alameda gets called for being in the net, 12-5 with Alisha to serve.  K9 hits wide on a down line attempt, 12-6.  Hailey gets another one, 13-6 and timeout Alameda.  Judy still serving.  We get confused on a pass and let one just fall, 13-7.  Megan gets blocked, 13-8.  Lift call on Alameda, 14-8 with Taylor serving.  Ace by Taylor, 15-8.  Net by Alameda, 16-8.  Net serve by us, 16-9.  Lift call on us, 16-10.  We dig it up off the block just to let it fall when the setter goes the wrong way, 16-11.  Alameda slaps one down, 16-12.  Alisha gets stuffed on a back row attempt, 16-13.  Alameda slaps one down in the middle, 16-14.  16-15 as we just stand around.  Alameda puts one in the net, 17-15 with K9 to serve.  Alameda gets another one down, 17-16.  Brit slaps it down, 18-16 with Meg to serve.  Ace by Megan, 19-16.  And another one, 20-16 and timeout Alameda.  Megan serving.  Hailey slaps one off the block, 21-16.  Hailey and Alisha with a block, 22-16.  Alameda finds a hole, 22-17.  Net serve, 23-17 with Judy to serve.  We let a shank pass go, 23-18.  K9 gets one from the back row, 24-18 with Alisha to serve.  Ace for the win!  25-18.  Yuba goes home with a 3-0 win.

Packing it up and heading back to the house.  Need to find some supper enroute though.  H says she's starving!  Imagine that.

Game 2:  Cougars will start with the serve.  Alameda in the net, 1-0 with Taylor to serve.  Double call on us when we try a back row set, 1-1.  Megan gets one to go, 2-1 and that sends K9 to the line.  Alameda puts it in the net, 3-1.  Hailey tries one from the back row but it goes net, 3-2.  Double on Alameda sends Megan to the line, 4-2.  Net call on Hailey, 4-3.  Net serve by Alameda, 5-3 with Judy in to serve.  Taylor wins a joust at the net and Alameda can't get it up, 6-3.  Another one goes out by Alameda, 7-3.  Hammertime gets in on the action, 8-3.  Hailey stuffs an overpass, 9-3.  Taylor gets one, 10-3.  Alameda in the net again, 11-3.  Another double call, 12-3.  Alisha gets a sharp angle to go, 13-3.  Timeout Alameda.  Judy still serving.  Alameda puts it in the net, 14-3.  Hammertime with another slapdown, 15-3.  Another net hit, 16-3.  Hailey slaps an overpass back, 17-3.  Alameda gets one to go, 17-4.  Another Hammertim dent, 18-4 with Alisha to the line.  Hailey and Taylor stuff one, 19-4.  Cougars hit wide, 20-4.  Double on us, 20-5.  Net serve, 21-5 with Hailey to serve.  Net serve, 21-6.  Megan hits long, 21-7.  K9 puts one over and Alameda can't keep the pass in play, 22-7 with Taylor to serve.  Another net serve, 22-8.  Focus Yuba!!!  Megan slaps one down, 23-8 with K9 to serve.  Ace on a net dribbler, 24-8.  Alisha finishes it off, 25-8 for another Yuba win.  Up 2-0 going in to game 3.

Away Game vs College of Alameda 10/29/2010 Game 1

Had a nice drive down to the island of Alameda.  Brings back lots of memories of VB Tournaments played here on the island over the years at the old Naval Air Station facilities.  We should do fine tonight, Alameda didn't show us a lot when they came to see us, but then neither did Laney, but we struggled against them the other night in Oakland.  Hopefully we've learned that lesson and will stay focused, put the foot on the gas and don't let up tonight.  I saw the current rankings today and it appears that Napa beat Solano in their first match, so if they can do it again, we still have a shot at the playoffs.  Of course that means that we have to beat Solano when they come to our house and beat them by more than they beat us at their place.  Doable, but it will take some work.  We should know late next week.

Game 1:  Guess we won the coin toss and will start off with the serve.  Taylor to the line.  K9 starts things off with a kill, 1-0.  Ace by Taylor and it's 2-0.  Brit joins the fun, 3-0.  We let one fall in the middle, 3-1.  Brit puts one in the net, 3-2.  Alameda serves long, 4-2 with K9 to serve.  Alameda hammers one down, 4-3.  Ace by Alameda on a net dribble, 4-4.  They serve out, 5-4 with Megan to serve.  A bad pass and it's 5-5.  Another net serve by Alameda sends Judy to the line at 6-5.  Taylor gets a dink from an overpass to go, 7-5.  They call us in the net, 7-6.  Net serve, 8-6 with Alisha to the line.  We play to short on D and they get one down deep, 8-7.  Alameda in the net, 9-7 with Hailey to serve.  Ace by Hailey, 10-7.  Alameda in the net again, 11-7.  K9 rips one down line, 12-7 and the Cougars want a timeout to talk it over.  Hailey still serving.  Alameda hits out, 13-7.  K9 gets another one down line, 14-7.  Hailey serves wide, 14-8.  Officials timeout to look at something in the books.  Not sure what's wrong.  Alameda coach is trying to sub out her middle and she sure is barking at her.  Not sure what the problem is.  Double call on Alameda, 15-8 with Taylor to the line.  Ace by Taylor, 16-8.  Megan tries one that goes wide, 16-9.  K9 gets one down the line from the right side, 17-9 with K9 to the service line.  Timeout Alameda.  Long serve, but it was close to line, 17-10.  Another net call on Alameda, 18-10 with Megan to the line.  Ace by Megan, 19-10.  Cougars put one in the net, 20-10.  Another Ace, 21-10.  Alisha gets blocked, 21-11.  Hammertime gets it right back, 22-11 with Judy to serve.  Alameda puts it in the net, 23-11.  Hailey slaps another one down, 24-11.  We send a free ball out?, 24-12.  Alisha gets a tip to go from the right side, 25-12 and a Yuba win.

Tayor Thompson had 32 assists and five kills and the Yuba College volleyball team notched a 25-20, 18-25, 25-14, 25-19 Bay Valley Conference road win over Laney.
Hailey Harris had 12 kills, 11 digs and six blocks, Brittany Keyes tallied seven kills and four blocks and Megan Dodd had four kills and three blocks for Yuba (11-7, 8-3), which travels to face Alameda on Friday.

Away Game vs Laney College Eagles 10/27/2010

After an entertaining drive to Walnut Creek and a short ride on the BART over to Oakland, here we are at Laney College in downtown Oakland.  An interesting gym here.  It's like a bowl and all the entries come in from the top.  Fairly old since it still has wooden bleachers, but I kind of like it this way.  Call me old school, but I love the older gyms and the way they were designed.  Cozy and up close to all the action.  Here we go for Game 1.

Home Game vs Napa 10/22/2010 Game 5

Game 5: Well, the battery is going quick and I forgot to pack the charger!  So I'll post something on the result when we get home.  Sorry about that!

Here we are several hours and one super wal-mart run later and I have to say the result wasn't what we wanted.  Our 49er's ultimately fell to Napa 15-9 in the final game and lost the match 3-2.  Very disappointing.  We gave this one away by not maintaining our intensity and for some reason they started playing "not to lose" instead of playing to win.  Too many dinks, tips and roll shots instead of aggressive swings on the ball.  I think that pretty much shuts the door on our playoff hopes.  We needed to be in the top 2 and with this loss, it all but assures that those spots will be taken by Napa and Solano this year.  But we have plenty of VB left to play this season.

It's 20-20 and timeout Yuba.  Napa serving.  Hammertime dents the floor on one, 21-20 with Alisha to serve.  Napa hits long but it's controversy, wait, the ref has changed the call and it was touched by us, 21-21.  Hammertime does it again, 22-21 and Hailey gets the serve.  Napa gets one to go angle, 22-22.  Napa gets one down deep, 22-23.  We overpass and Napa stuffs it right back, 22-24.  We overpass again with the same result and it's a 22-25 Napa win.  Looks like we're going to game 4 now.  We really need to come out focused and ready this game.

Wanted to see better play than this considering our next match, but we'll take the win and go back to practice to work on things a little more tomorrow.

Away Game - Los Medanos - 10/20/2010

Hello from Pittsburgh, CA home of the Los Medanos Mustangs.  Interesting drive down through the back country of Yolo County and then in to the Delta area along the river.  Scenic, and we saw quite a bit of it due to the slow moving traffic.  Looks like our cheer squad is only 2 tonight since Mrs. Boney wasn't able to make the trip due to work deadlines.  I'm sure she'll make it home in time to read this and keep up with the activity.  This team didn't show us much when they came over to our place to play, but you never know what can happen.  Hopefully the girls stay focused and use this as a final tune-up before we play Napa on Friday.

Going with a little different technique tonight and posting each game as we go instead of just one long match log.  We'll see how it goes.

Home Game vs Mendocino Community College 10/15/2010

A little late getting to the game, but we made it in time for the first serve.  We're getting good at this photo finish for the start of the games:)  Tonight we play Mendocino from up along the northern CA coast.  This team is the farthest away from us distance wise and when we have to go play them, it will be an all day trip.  But tonight they are in our house!

Game 1:  Mendocino will start with the serve.  Long rally to start it off, but Mendocino gets one down, 0-1.  Mendocino serves long, 1-1 with Judy to serve.  Ace!, 2-1.  Alisha puts one in the net, 2-2.  Mendocino serves long again and i'ts 3-2 with Alisha to serve.  We make a bad pass, 3-3.  Another long rally and Hailey gets one down, 4-3.  Hailey to serve.  Long rally and Mendocino gets one, 4-4.  Bad serve receive, 4-5.  Net serve, 5 all with Taylor to serve.  Mendocino hits one out, 6-5.  Brit hammers one home from the right side, 7-5.  K9 gets one off the block, 8-5.  Ace by Taylor, 9-5.  Mendocino hits out, 10-5.  Taylor serves long, 10-6.  Brit gets another one from the left side this time, 11-6, K9 to serve.  Mendocino can't get it back to us, 12-6.  Megan gets one down, 13-6.  A tip by Alisha goes down, 14-6 and Mendocino wants a timeout to talk it over.  Mendocino gets a tip to go in, 14-7.  They get another one in, 14-8.  Alisha gets one off the block, 15-8 with Megan to serve.  Mendocino hits long, 16-8.  Bad passing on Mendocino, 17-8.  Mendocino hits the antenna, 18-8.  Ace by Megan, 19-8.  Hailey hammers one down in the middle, 20-8 and another timeout by Mendocino.  Another Ace by Megan, 21-8.  Brit hits one long, 21-9.  K9 gets stuffed and it's 21-10.  Alisha gets it back and puts one down, 22-10 with Judy to serve.  Lift call on us, 22-11.  Mendocino serves long, 23-11 with Alisha to serve.  Hailey puts one in the net, 23-12.  K9 goes wide on a rip down line, 23-13.  Taylor ends a long rally, 24-13 with Hailey to serve.  Mendocino can't handle the serve and it's a 25-13 win for Yuba.

Game 2:  Megan will start us off serving. Well, I'm back.  I HATE Windows and their silly restarts that happen on auto when it downloads an update!  Right in the middle of typing, the whole system shut down.  As we return to the action it's 13-7 and there have been some really good rallys while we were away waiting on the computer to come back up.  Back to live action as K9 rips one to make it 14-7.  Taylor serves long, 14-8.  Long rally and Brit finishes it off, 15-8 with K9 to serve.  Brit gets one over that Mendocino can't handle, 16-8.  Mendocino hits long, 17-8.  Alisha hits long, 17-9.  Alisha gets one down on a set from Brit, 18-9 with Megan to serve.  Long rally with some great hits and digs but Mendocino gets it to fall, 18-10.  Ace by Mendocino, 18-11.  They serve in the net, 19-11 with Judy to serve.  Mendocino can't handled the serve, 20-11.  And the next one is the same, 21-11.  We are in the net, 21-12.  We put one in the net, 21-13.  Mendocino puts one in the net, 22-13 with Alisha to serve.  Bad set puts Hailey in the net, 22-14.  Mendocino puts a block on hailey, 22-15.  K9 rips one down, 23-15 with Hailey to serve.  Ace by Hailey, 24-15.  Taylor dumps one on them for the winner.  25-15 Yuba. 

We seem to be playing a little better tonight.  Not nearly as many self inflicted wounds and it's showing.  Mendocino has some good defense but they just don't have a lot of firepower on offense.  But they do make us work for every point. 

Game 3:  Mendocino to serve.  Taylor sends one deep and it's 1-0 with Judy in to serve.  Hailey launches a missile down the middle, 2-0.  Ace by Judy, 3-0.  Mendocino gets one down, 3-1.  Deshawna gets one down, 4-1 with Alisha to serve.  She puts it in the net, 4-2.  K9 rips one down line for 5-3 with Hailey serving.  K9 gets a block for a kill, 6-2.  Megan gets in on the action and it's 7-2.  Hailey serves a bad one, 7-3.  K9 gets it back with a kill, 8-3 with Taylor to serve.  Mendocino hits it in the net, 9-3.  Ace by Taylor, 10-3.  And another one! 11-3 and it's timeout Mendocino.  Taylor still serving.  We make a bad pass and can't recover, 11-4.  Hailey gets one from the back row, 12-4.  K9 to serve.  Megan gets one, 13-4.  Another long rally but Megan finishes it, 14-4.  K9 still serving.  Ace Ace Baby! 15-4.  Brit puts one in the net, 15-5.  Mendocino puts one in the net, 16-5 with Megan to serve.  Mendocino hits long, 17-5.  Hailey gets a tip to go down, 18-5.  Hailey and Deshwana stuff one to end a long rally, 19-5.  Mendocino hits long, 20-5.  Megan still serving.  Hailey gets stuffed on a C, 20-6.  We get called in the net on a block, 20-7.  Hailey goes Hammertime on them, 21-7 with Judy serving.  Mendocino hits long, 22-7.  Another kill by Hailey makes it 23-7.  Taylor gets a swing and makes it count, 24-7.  Mendocino gets one to go down and stop the run, 24-8.  They serve long and it's a 25-8 win.

It's still hot in this gym!  When will winter finally get here?

Lady 49ers grind out victory over Contra Costa

With each unforced error, bad serve and spike into the net, Greg Chapman's eye rolling became more pronounced. He sighed, slouched back in his chair and grumbled after the numerous miscues from the Yuba College volleyball team.
"I hope you understand how embarrassing that was," he said after the 49ers match against Contra Costa.
All that, and they won. Yuba swept no less. It was 25-10, 25-19, 25-19.
Not good enough, Chapman said. Not for a team eyeing the postseason.
"We should hold them under 10, under 15," he said.
Contra Costa is one of the cupcakes on Yuba's Bay Valley Conference schedule. The Comets were 1-43 in the BVC over the last three years heading into this season. When the two teams meet, it's usually a standardized, paint-by-numbers affair where Yuba plays its entire roster and the scores are heavily lopsided in the 49ers favor.
In game two, Yuba was down 9-5 and 20-19 before rallying for six straight points. In game three, the 49ers had a 23-16 lead before letting the Comets make it interesting.
"We talked about controlling the pace, that's a big part of it, and we didn't do that at all," Chapman said.
It wasn't like the team was slacking off either, he said. The 49ers practiced well the day before and weren't treating this game like some 8 a.m. lecture they could roll through half awake.
This 10-women team of all freshman just had trouble converting.
"There's no doubt we were the best team on the court," Chapman said. "And we were playing against ourselves."
One look at the stat sheet said it all for Chapman.
"Serving percentage: Yuck," Chapman said.
Lost in the self-criticism is the fact the 49ers (8-6) improved their BVC record to 5-2. While it's no secret the conference title goes through Solano and Napa, this young team uses each of its matches to improve and develop.
Kelijo Boney had nine kills, Hailey Harris added eight and Brittany Keyes had three. Taylor Thompson had 25 assists Judy Saefong had three aces and 100 percent serving.
Not mind-blowing, but effective enough.
"It's bad, but the girls expect more from themselves," Chapman said. "You can tell they're freshman sometimes."

Home Game vs Contra Costa 10/13/2010

OK, we're late with the computer for this match.  Had some kind of weird error booting it up and it hung for 15 minutes.  Tonight we host the Contra Costa Comets from down in the East Bay area.  Anyway, the game is fairly sloppy but we are up 12-4 with Taylor serving.  K9 takes one deep for 13-4.  Taylor serves long, 13-5 and then Contra Costa returns the favor.  14-5 with K9 serving.  Megan gets one down, 15-5.  Comets get one back, 15-6.  Judy puts one over and the Comets mishandle, 16-6 with Marissa serving.  Double call on us, 16-7.  They call Hailey in the net, 16-8.  Four hits on Contra Costa 17-8 with Brit serving.  Hailey slaps one down, 18-8.  We let an overpass fall on the floor.  How embarassing is that?  18-9.  Marissa gets one from the back row, 19-9 with Judy serving.  20-9 as the Comets put one in the net.  They get one off our block, 20-10.  Taylor gets a nice setter dunk, 21-10 with Hailey serving.  K9 rips one down middle, 22-10.  Comets hit long, 23-10.  Double on the Comets, 24-10.  Comets put the last one in the net, 25-10 for the 49er's.

Game 2: Megan is testing the powers of the big dog again by sticking her tongue out at me.  Surely she learned something from the last time that happened?  Here we go!  Deshawna tries one in the deep corner but it goes long, 0-1.  Deshawna tries again and scores one, 1-1 with Judy in to serve.  Comets get one off a touch, 1-2.  Double call on our set, 1-3.  Hailey gets is back, 2-3.  Comets get one down line from the right side, 2-4.  K9 gets one off the block, 3-4 with Hailey to serve.  Ace by Hailey, 4 all.  She serves out on the next one, 4-5.  Taylor misses on a dink attempt, 4-6.  Comets get another one off a touch, 4-7.  K9 gets one down line from the right side, 5-7 with Taylor to serve.  We hit one out, 5-8.  We let one hit the net, 5-9.  Brit slaps one down, 6-9 with K9 to serve.  Brit gets another one, (must have been my homemade biscuits last night!), 7-9.  Comets hit long, 8-9.  We over pass out of the court, 8-10.  Bad serve receive, 8-11.  Comets serve long, 9-11 with Marissa to serve.  Comets mis-time a hit, 10-11.  Ace by Marissa! And it's 11 all.  Contra Costa puts one in the net, 12-11 and the Comets call a timeout.  Marissa continues serving out of the timeout.  She serves long, 12-12.  Big stuff by Brit and Hailey, 13-12 with Judy to serve.  Lift call on the Comets, 14-12.  Marissa lets one get by her, 14-13.  We let one fall, 14 all.  Another one falls off our block, 14-15.  Pick it up ladies!  Contra Costa puts one in the net, 15 all with Deshawna to serve.  Comets blow the pass, 16-15.  They pass one out, 17-15.  We serve out, 17-16.  K9 rips one sharp angle, 18-16 with Hailey to serve.  Comets get one in, 18-17.  K9 with a rip down line, 19-17 with Taylor to serve.  We let one roll off the block and fall, 19-18.  An overpass by us that falls in for a kill, 20-18 with K9 to serve.  Comets get a net dribbler to roll over, 20-19.  Comets let one fall on a freeball, 21-19 with Marissa to serve.  Lift call on the Comets, 22-19.  Comets put one in the net, 23-19.  Another one hits the net, 24-19.  Great save by Deshawna and then Hailey finishes it off, 25-19 Yuba.  Coach has a lot of subs in the game getting some floor time which probably explains some of the sloppy play.  It's amazing how confused things get when you put new faces on the court!

Game 3: It will sure be nice when winter gets here and we can cool off this gym!  About 90 in here today.  Marissa will start it off serving.  Brit goes hard but puts one in the net, 0-1.  Bad serve receive, 0-2.  Hailey gets just enough on one to put it down, 1-2 with Judy serving.  Comets hit long, 2-2.  Alisha hits long, 2-3.  Hailey slaps one down, and it's 3 all with Alisha to serve.  Comets hit long, 4-3.  We serve long, 4-4.  K9 gets is back with a rip down line, 5-4 with Hailey to serve.  Contra Costa gets a roll shot over our block to fall, 5-5.  Comets hit one in the net, 6-5 with Taylor to serve.  Double on the Comets, 7-5.  Comets put another one in the net, 8-5.  Taylor serves long, 8-6.  Hailey gets one from the back row off a touch, 9-6 with K9 serving.  Alisha puts one in the net, 9-7.  Brit gets one off an A, 10-7 with Marissa serving.  Carry call on us, 10-8.  Alisha puts one in the net, 10-9.  Hailey gets one down, 11-9 with Judy to serve.  Comets get it in the net, 12-9.  They put another one in the net, 13-9.  This time they hit long, 14-9 and it's timeout Comets!  It didn't help a lot, they hit long again, 15-9.  Now they hit wide, 16-9.  Ace by Judy, 17-9.  Comets get one on the line, 17-10.  Net call on us, 17-11.  Comets serve long, 18-11 with Alisha to serve.  We let one fall, 18-12.  Need to move the feet on defense!  Comets serve in the net, 19-12 with Hailey to serve.  Net serve makes it 19-13.  Taylor dumps one for 20-13.  Taylor to serve.  Confusion on defense lets one fall, 20-14.  Comets hit out, 21-14 with K9 to serve.  Once again we don't move our feet on defense, 21-15.  Comets put it in the net, 22-15 with Marissa serving.  Lift call on us, 22-16.  Hailey rips one, 23-16, with Judy to serve.  But the Comets call a timeout first.  Coach Chapman isn't looking real happy with the way we are playing.  Wonder what practice will be like tomorrow????  They call Hailey in the net again, 23-17.  We put one in the net, 23-18.  Double call on the Comets, 24-18.  We let one fall, 24-19.  Comets serve it in the net to finish a pretty ugly game, 25-19 Yuba.

We are out of here and looking for something cooler!

State Rankings

The latest State Rankings by the California Community College Athletic Association were released on 5 Oct.  (http://www.cccaasports.org/Volleyball/Women/rankings.asp) Our 49er's are not in the top 25, but we can change that with a few home wins over Napa and Solano over the next couple weeks.  The latest statewide stat leaders list is also out (http://www.cccaasports.org/Volleyball/Women/statistics.asp) and here's what it looks like for our team.  We have several girls ranked and I think the next release will improve some of these rankings because we've racked up some stats lately.
