Lady Niners spike Alameda

Yuba sweeps past Cougars to improve to 3-1 in BVC

As the volleyball team played its match against Alameda, the Yuba College women's basketball team patiently sat in the stands and waited to use the gym for practice.
Total wait time: 43 minutes.
Setter Taylor Thompson called it "a killing." Coach Greg Chapman dubbed it "a time for us to work on some stuff." The scorebook read a 25-9, 25-9, 25-5 sweep for the 49ers, who improved to 3-1 in Bay Valley Conference play with the swift shellacking of the Cougars on Wednesday.
"That was like the fastest game I played," Thompson said.
The match started at 6 p.m. And after racking up 17 assists in less time than it takes to attend the average class at Yuba, Thompson came to that realization in the parking lot, as she her fellow teammates chatted with the sun still setting outside.
Another topic of conversation was the damaging effectiveness the 49ers' serving. The team tallied 17 aces, a stat they, and their coach were rather pleased about.
"It's just one of those things — you want first serve and you want aces," Chapman said.
Well he got four each from Alisha Benge, Megan Dodd and Judy Saefong, and Hailey Harris added three.
Efforts like that are exactly what Yuba's coaching staff want to see on days like this, where the players can use a match against a weaker conference foe to fine-tune facets of their game. With the 49ers (6-5) having a bye on Friday, this game essentially became a shortened practice session in full uniform.
"One of the things we talked about was controlling the pace," Chapman said. "We stepped it up."
They turned it into a sprint.
But that's what the team needs to do in games like this, he said. For the 49ers to repeat as BVC champions, the team will face a tough challenge from Solano, Napa Valley and a Marin team on the rise.
"We're going to have to play good games against them to beat them," Chapman said.
Those "good games" will have to come back-to-back. Next week, Yuba faces Marin on the road and makes the trip to Fairfield on Friday to take on Solano.
That makes matches like Wednesday's against Alameda must wins for this young team. So far, the 49ers and their roster of all freshman has exceeded expectations. In Chapman's opinion, he never has to worry about a lack of hustle.
"Oh yeah, the attitude," he said glowingly.
Harris finished with a team-high eight kills and added two digs. Kelijo Boney had five kills and Brittany Keyes was set five times by Thompson and finished with four kills.
